New Scholarship for SVPA Students in Acting Available
THE ANN GWYNN-JONES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Students who are commencing the first year of the Bachelor of Arts (Acting for Screen and Stage) degree at the Wagga Wagga Campus of Charles Sturt University are invited to apply for the 2010 Ann Gwynn-Jones Memorial Scholarship offered through the Charles Sturt Foundation.
Value: $1000
Tenure: One Year
In the event that no suitable applications were received from commencing students, then continuing students would be considered, at the discretion of the University.

Green television Studio Sustainability Grant
The School of Visual and Performing Arts are proud to be the successful recipients of a 2009 Sustainability Grant. The funds will allow conversion of television studio lighting fixtures from high power consumption, high heat generating tungsten lamps to current generation "cool" lighting utilising fluorescent and LED technologies. This is expected to realise an 80% power consumption reduction on the previous fixtures, and will improve summer working conditions through the reduction in heat generation.
The project will also give students exposure to current and more sustainable technologies as similar fixtures are becoming more common in use on film and television productions. The project has been instigated by Television Production lecturers Patrick Sproule and Bruce Gater is expected to be completed and in use by November 2009.

International industry links for TV production students
Television production students at Charles Sturt University (CSU) at Wagga Wagga have broken new ground in their on-going development of links with industry. The Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers (SMPTE) has agreed to the establishment of a CSU student chapter of the Society.
The Society's Board of Governors approved the move during a meeting in Atlanta in the United States on Thursday 4 June. The move is the inaugural student chapter in Australia. Formed in 1916, the SMPTE is regarded as the leading technical society for the motion imaging industry. "This new relationship will give CSU students access to conferences, papers, scholarships, guest lectures and of course international industry contacts," said television production course co-ordinator Mr Patrick Sproule. "I believe the approval to form the CSU student chapter shows an enormous respect for the course at Charles Sturt University as well as the Society's recognition of the importance of investment in education in the TV and film industries. A special thanks to past chairman of SMPTE Australian Section, Mr John Maizels, for recommending the formation of the student chapter and shepherding us through due process."
Meanwhile, the SMPTE Australian Section has donated $6 000 so 85 Bachelor of Arts (Television Production) students at CSU at Wagga Wagga can attend the SMPTE09 conference in Sydney in July.

Student shoots the chef and wins
Inspired by the style of film noir, Charles Sturt University (CSU) photography student Ms Sophie Schirmer took to a bleak alleyway to capture and shoot chef John Church from EAT at Romano’s Hotel in Wagga Wagga in regional NSW.
Ms Sophie Schirmer has won the student category in the annual Sydney Morning Herald Shoot the Chef! photographic competition.
Originally from a farm at Lockhart in the south-west of NSW, Ms Schirmer graduated from CSU in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts (Photography)(http://www.csu.edu.au/faculty/arts/vpa/photography/) and is currently undertaking a Master of Arts Practice specialising in photography (www.csu.edu.au/svpa/map).
Ms Schirmer has won two return airline tickets from Sydney to Europe. Her winning photo of chef John Church will be exhibited at Star City in Sydney during the Sydney International Food Festival from Thursday 1 October until Friday 31 October.
“I had great fun working with John and am thrilled to be named the student winner of this high profile and competitive event,” said Ms Schirmer.
“It has been my dream to go to London after completing my studies at Charles Sturt University in search of international experience in commercial photography and this prize will go a long way to helping my fulfil this dream.”
“This award confirms Sophie’s talent behind the lens and will serve her well as she carves out a career in photography,” said Mr Jamie Holcombe photography lecturer in the School of Visual and Performing Arts http://www.csu.edu.au/faculty/arts/vpa/ at CSU at Wagga Wagga.
Ms Schirmer’s award comes as two recent CSU photography graduates had their works selected to hang in the National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra in 2009.

Two Fine Art Students selected as finalists for CountryScapes 2009
Fine Arts students Sally Mumford and Judy Paradice have been selected as finalists for CountryScapes 2009 - the $35,000 Country Energy Art Prize for Landscape Painting. Sally's piece Fire on Ridge, and Judy's piece Kinglake Bushfires will be exhibited with the other finalists at Lismore Regional Gallery from 5th November to 12 December 2009.
The Winner of the prize will be announced on the Official opening night of the exhibition on 5 November 2009.

Student selected as a Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award Finalist
PhD student Rohan Nicol has been successful in being selected a s a finalist in the highly regarded Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award for his entry Peppered Sunlight.
In addition to a $30,000 grant, the overall winner of the award will also receive a trip to Milan to attend the prestigious Salone del Mobile furniture fair. Four runners up will receive $2,500 each and the five further finalists will each receive $1,000 making the Design Discovery Award Australia’s richest design prize.
The finalists will be required to present their entry to our panel of judges in October before their works go on to be part of the Design Discovery Award Exhibition.
This year’s Design Discovery Award will see Bombay Sapphire take the exhibition outside of the traditional gallery space, aiming to share the captivating talent of Australia’s design community with a wider audience. The DDA tour, starting in Sydney from 9th-30th November will be presented at Establishment, Sydney, one of the city’s premier design bars. The exhibition will then be displayed in Melbourne and Brisbane venues in early 2010.

SVPA student, Rohan Nicol receives Australian Council Grant
Rohan Nicol is a research scholar working towards his PhD “Crafting designs on Wealth”, in the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga. His research interest involves identifying a financially sustainable model of studio based craft and design practice through collaborative engagements with the Australian manufacturing industry.
He has recently received funding from the Australia Council for the Arts to extend research he has undertaken during the course of his scholarship. Funding of $30 000 will enable him to undertake a Connections Residency Program, with which he has proposed to complete a residency with regional manufacturer Precision Signs to develop three new lighting design products.
The initial outcome of his collaborative work with Precision Signs will be launched at the design made trade exhibition staged in the Royal Exhibition hall during the State of Design Festival in Melbourne on the 15th July 2009

2nd year CSU graphic design student short listed for Newstar award at agIDEAS 2009
Missy Dempsey’s work was shortlisted in the agIdeas 2009 NewStar competition. The competition was held last week in Melbourne as part of International Design Week. 65 students were shortlisted from hundreds of entries from tertiary institutions all over Australia, New Zealand and parts of Asia.
Unlike previous years where students had to respond to a specific theme and/or brief this year’s competition was wide open. Students could submit any work either 2D or 3D - the only restriction was that they couldn’t submit more than 3 pieces. This made the competition very difficult for both the students and judges. Hundreds of submissions were culled down to 65. All speakers at agIDEAS participated in the judging.
Ken Cato the chairman of AgIDEAS described this years submissions as "some of the best he had ever seen" and congratulated all who entered especially those who had been shortlisted.
As in previous years the first prize was two weeks work experience in Italy with one of the worlds leading studios and research centres - Fabrica.
An exhibition of the shortlisted works is now on at the Melbourne Museum and will continue till June.

National Photographic Portrait Prize
The photography skills of Charles Sturt University (CSU) students are on national exhibition in Canberra. Two Bachelor of Arts (Photography) students had works selected in 2008 to hang in the National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. The students, Ms Kate Lewis, who is now studying a Masters of Arts Practice at CSU, and Mr Matt Regan joined staffed from the CSU School of Visual and Performing Arts http://www.csu.edu.au/faculty/arts/vpa/ in Wagga Wagga at the exhibition’s opening in Canberra on Thursday 19 March. “While awards are always celebrated and welcomed, for our students’ work to be selected alongside photographers with much longer professional careers is a significant achievement both for Kate and Matt, but also for our photography staff,” said Head of the School of Visual and Performing Arts, Associate Professor Margaret Woodward.
