Charles Sturt University's Thurgoona campus has expanded since 1997, when the then Governor-General, Sir William Deane, laid the foundation stone.
Yesterday the new Governor-General, Quentin Bryce, officially opened the $4.5 million Faculty of Business Building as construction of several other projects continued.
The ceremony was attended by university Chancellor Lawrie Willett, Vice-Chancellor and President Ian Goulter and campus head Gall Whiteford.
Ms Bryce toured the school with its head, John Atkinson, while wetland scientist David Mitchell spoke to Ms Bryce about the campus wetlands.
There were some smiles from guests when Professor Mitchell walked through the rammed earth walls of the environment science school, waving his arms and explaining how it was designed to get rid of hot air.
Ms Bryce got a briefing on campus research and praised the university for its scholarship and research in social and environmental sustainability.
As a former principal of Women’s College at Sydney University she said the CSU campus was a superb place for students because it offers a mix for life, friendship and learning.
A learning commons base is under construction at the campus and should be ready next year, while 300 accommodation units are being built.
The university is spending $40 million on the campus development, including a refurbishment of the Gordon Beavan Building which is being vacated by the business school and library.
